Fashion & E-commerce Websites

Editorial-quality online stores that convert. We build on Shopify with a design approach borrowed from magazine publishing — because fashion and lifestyle brands deserve to look as good online as they do in print.

The gap in the market

Most Shopify stores look like Shopify stores. There's nothing wrong with the platform — it's excellent — but the ecosystem of themes and apps has produced a visual monoculture where fashion brands that should look distinct end up looking like variations on the same template. For a brand with a genuine creative identity, that's a problem: the website signals "small business" when the brand should be signalling "this is worth your money."

We approach e-commerce with the same thinking we bring to editorial photography: the product is the hero, the layout is the frame, and every design decision should be pulling the customer toward the thing they came to buy. That sounds obvious, but most e-commerce templates optimise for inventory display rather than desire — and those are not the same thing.

01 — Design approach

We start every e-commerce project with a creative direction session before any design work begins. What does the brand stand for? Who is the customer, and what are they buying alongside this brand in their life? What does the website need to feel like — intimate and editorial, or confident and bold? These questions determine the typography, the spacing, the colour system, and the way products are displayed, long before a single page is designed.

For fashion and lifestyle brands specifically, the homepage is a magazine cover — it sets the tone for everything that follows and determines whether the visitor decides this brand is worth their time. We design homepages that lead with hero imagery and editorial layouts rather than product grids, because aspiration is purchased before products are. The product grid comes second.

Product pages follow a structured hierarchy: photography fills the upper screen; key information (name, price, available sizes/variants) sits immediately accessible; the product description reads like copy, not a spec sheet; and the add-to-cart action is persistent as the user scrolls. Related products are shown as editorial suggestions, not algorithmic grid items.

02 — Photography art direction

The single biggest lever on e-commerce conversion is photography. A product shot on a white background with flat lighting will convert at a fraction of the rate of the same product shot with editorial quality and genuine atmosphere. This isn't a design opinion — it's documented in every major e-commerce conversion study of the past decade.

Because we're a photography studio as well as a web studio, we can art-direct the visual library for the website at the same time as designing it. This means the photography and the design system are built together — the images are chosen for the layouts they'll occupy, and the layouts are designed for the images they'll contain. The result is a coherence that's very difficult to achieve when photography and web design are handled by separate teams working in sequence.

For brands that come to us with an existing photo library, we provide an art direction brief for future shoots that ensures new content stays on-brand as the range expands.

03 — Build & technical setup

We build on Shopify for almost all e-commerce projects — it's the right platform for the vast majority of fashion and lifestyle brands, with robust inventory management, excellent payment processing, and a mature app ecosystem for fulfilment, returns, and marketing. For brands already on Shopify with an existing theme, we can redesign within their current setup. For new stores, we build on a custom theme that gives far greater design flexibility than off-the-shelf alternatives.

The technical setup goes beyond the storefront: we configure the product management system so the client's team can add new products, manage stock, and run promotions without developer support; integrate with the brand's preferred fulfilment provider; set up email flows for abandoned cart, post-purchase, and order confirmation; and ensure the store is optimised for both Google Shopping and organic search before launch.

Every store we build includes a handover session and written documentation. We also offer ongoing support packages for brands that want a studio partner to manage updates, run campaign pages, and handle seasonal changes.

The result

The brands we've built stores for consistently see a step-change in conversion rate compared to their previous setup — primarily driven by the quality of the photography and the clarity of the product page hierarchy. The editorial design approach also produces measurably higher average order values, because customers who are engaged by the brand story before they reach the product page are more likely to add multiple items.

An e-commerce website isn't just a shop. For a fashion or lifestyle brand, it's the most important piece of brand communication you have — the thing potential customers judge you by before they've ever touched your product. It should be good enough to sell on its own.

"We'd been using a Debut theme for two years and wondering why our conversion rate was stuck. Six weeks after launching the new store our revenue per session had doubled. The design was the variable." Founder, fashion e-commerce client
